14I have already condemned, in unequivocal ([ˌʌnɪ'kwɪvəkl] 明確的、毫不含糊的) terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy (['kantrəˌvɝsɪ] 爭議). For some, nagging (嘮叨的) questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce (好鬥兇猛的) critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely - just as I'm sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis (['ræbɑɪ] 猶太教祭司) with which you strongly disagreed.

15But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren't simply controversial. They weren't simply a religious leader's effort to speak out against perceived (感受到的) injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly (深深地、極度地) distorted view of this country -- a view that sees white racism as endemic (普遍的、盛行的), and that elevates (舉起) what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart (['stɔlwɚt] 堅決的) allies like Israel, instead of emanating (['ɛməˌnet] 散發出) from the perverse ([pɚ'vɝs] 邪惡的) and hateful ideologies (意識形態) of radical (激進的) Islam.

16As such, Reverend Wright's comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged (緊張的、可能引起激烈反應的) at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of monumental (巨大的) problems -- two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic (慢性的) health care crisis, and potentially devastating (毀壞性的) climate change; problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all.

17Given my background, my politics, and my professed (公開的) values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess (坦承) that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the snippets (片面零星的知識) of those sermons (['sɝˌmən] 牧師的講道說教) that have run in an endless loop on the television and You Tube, or if Trinity (基督教所謂的三位一體,歐巴馬參加的教會名稱) United Church of Christ conformed (符合) to the caricatures (誇張的諷刺畫) being peddled (兜售) by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way.
